Unable to access Navision Development Environment. Getting error “login failed for user domain name \userid”

Resolution: If you want to access development environment user must have proper rights on SQL server.

Please refer TechNet Blog for more information. Follow below steps to assign rights for a user id to access Navision Development Environment:

  1. Open SQL management studio with SQL administrator ID.
  2. Expand the Security node, right-click Logins, and choose New Login.
  3. In the Login – New dialog box, select Search.
  4. In the Select User or Group dialog box, select a valid Active Directory user.
  5. In the Login – New dialog box, under Select a Page, choose Server Roles. Select the sysadmin check box .
Note : If you are not providing sysadmin role for the user id you will get another issue while accessing Navision development environment. Click on link for more information :Blog
  6. under Select a Page, choose User Mapping , click on database and below, select check box on the db_owner and Public roles and click OK.

**Note: In the comments section, few visitors have suggested that db_datareader and db_datawriter permission are enough to resolve the issue. Not required db_owner permissions. Please let me know if have any other solutions.

  1. Thanks for finally writing about >Unable to access Navision Development Environment. Getting error “login failed for user domain name userid” <Liked it!

  2. Hi

Had the same error message for a user in Navision 2017. I did not have to grant sysadmin right but had also to grant db_reader and db_writer on the database to the user.
Like this it worked and the user doesnt have to be sysadmin.

  3. You shouldn’t need to give sysadmin login to the whole sql server instance in this case. It would be better to give user access on the database level as Michael describes.

  4. Michael and Adam,

Thanks for your comments. I will modify blog post as you suggested.
